Michael Richard Weir was born on May 12, 1970. Weir grew up like many other Canadian boys, loving Wayne Gretzky and the game of hockey. His interests would eventually transform from those on the ice, to those on the course. From the age of 11, Weir could always be found hitting balls into the lake near his home in Bright's Grove, Ontario. Now at the age of 34, Weir is known throughout the golfing world and is considered to be one of Canada's finest ever. After a great junior career, Weir attended Brigham Young University, studying Recreation Management. His university career found him winning three events and finishing in the top ten 19 times. Weir quickly moved up the ranks, winning the 1993 Tournament Players Championship and the CPGA Rookie of the Year award. Weir turned pro in 1992. In 1996, Weir had his first breakthrough on the PGA tour, finishing in a tie for 5th at the Greater Vancouver Open. After another great performance on the PGA tour in 1997, Weir joined full time. He quickly produced great results, with his career breaking through in 1999. During this season, Weir finished in the top ten seven times and earned his first career victory at the Air Canada Championship. In 2000, Weir again had a great season with nine top ten finishes and another victory at the WGC American Express Championship. Weir also finished, a career high at the time, 6th on the money list. Other than golf, Weir enjoys fishing, hockey, and his family. Mike Weir is happily married to Bricia Weir and has two daughters, Elle Marisa and Lili.
